Leaving Yangon turned out slightly harder than it would usually be. With the water festival coming up most buses were already booked out. I was lucky to find a bus to Kalaw and almost managed to miss it. Because the local bus was stuck in traffic, I had to get off and someone on a motorcycle took me further. My booked bus had already left, but we caught up with it and I got on. The following morning I slept and got off one stop too late. Luckily hitchhiking back was very easy.
In Kalaw I registered for a three day trek and bought a hat. Together with my flip flops and the traditional longyi, my trekking outfit was perfect. Together with four other travellers and our guide we set off.
The scenery changed a lot during the trek. We started through jungly areas, walked along vegetable fields, climbed hills and crossed rivers. For the two nights we stayed in traditional wooden huts in small villages. In the evening we could question the guest house owners about life in Myanmar. During the day it was interesting to talk to our very nice guide.
The trek finished with a boat ride across the Inle lake. The trek had obviously not been as spectacular as in the Himalayas in Nepal. I really enjoyed it though. We saw pretty and very different landscapes and had a fun group. It was great speaking to the guide and learning about traditions here.
