Diving with a whale shark

Islands in Thailand and Malaysia

Frederik, Boris and I went to Koh Tao as it is one of the best places to learn diving. So the first thing we did after our arrival was to register at the Crystal Dive diving school. From then on our days had a pretty similar schedule. Getting a sandwich for breakfast, learning diving, having a curry for lunch, another diving session and then another curry for dinner and occasionally some beers.

We did the PADI open water diver and the advanced open water diver directly afterwards. The first day was only watching videos and doing quizzes. On the second day we practiced all the skills in the pool. And then it got really fun and we did our first dives. We saw many colourful fish and on our night dive we saw the plankton light up. The highlight of those days was without a doubt our last dive. We went down to almost 30 metres to a shipwreck. It was a second world ship that had only sank six years ago. That was already pretty cool and then we saw a huge Barracuda. And as the grand finale we were super lucky to see a whale shark. We swam with it for a couple of minutes and always when I thought it had gone, it came right back. It was a big attraction. Back on the boat we could see more and more tourist boats arriving and snorkelers jumping into the water. There couldn't have been a better finish for our diving courses.

In the evenings we went to different bars with fire shows. People showed their skills spinning burning sticks or everyone could go fire rope skipping.

I had some great days with Frederik and Boris and hope to visit them in Denmark sometime. At the end of the diving course though we all went to different locations. Boris went back to Europe, Frederik to another island in Thailand and I decided to go to the island Penang in Malaysia. After a comfortable night ferry and a less comfortable long bus ride I reached Georgetown. Famous for its food and street art I just walked around exploring. I find it a very relaxing city with a calm atmosphere, but lively food courts in the evening.
